TESS RAMSEY
Mont Rose was a solo exhibition inspired by the fictional Jenny Montrose, a character added to the classic adventure novel Swiss Family Robinson by its first French translator Isabelle de Montolieu in 1814. In the story, Montrose, who sometimes goes by the nickname Bertie, is advised by her father to dress and act like a boy in order to survive on the island. Performance artist and sculptor Tess Ramsey channeled this and many other popular survival stories to explore gender performance as a necessary means of survival.
