Eighth graders programmed Arduinos to make instruments that operate like theremins using an ultrasonic sensor. Rather than controlling voltage and sound directly, these theremins converted the proximity into MIDI data. These signals were then sent to GarageBand where students were invited to experiment with the sonic character of their instruments.
